Inferno

“My purpose was to stroll into the shade for a moment; but no sooner within than it seemed to me I had stepped into the gloomy circle of some Inferno.” (Conrad 22).

Marlow is describing here the jungle and the European outposts along it as a kind of hell, by use of the word “Inferno." In the early 12th century, Dante Alighieri wrote an epic poem entitled the "Divine Comedy," in which his description of hell, or the "inferno" was dreadful and horrific.
